Goldfinch
(heavy as a hummingbird, but more difficult to find)

acrylic on canvas (2008)

Another true abstract, Goldfinch was a by product of a project I was doing creating an abstract painting based on Holst's planets suite. This was to be a piece depicting Earth, when I was adding in the planets Earth and Pluto (which of course don't feature in the musical suite, which is based not on astronomy but on astrology.)

I decided that the painting didn't belong in the set but I developed it instead with the idea of having a bright element that both merges into the indistinct background, and yet is very clearly defined and distinct. The subtitle is a line from Duke Special lyric which I felt somehow summed up what I was trying to achieve, but the name Goldfinch seemed to suit it as well - a brightly coloured bird which somehow also manages to be difficult to see in the trees.
