In search of The Group of Seven

Winter Thaw in the Woods - Tom Thomson

Above : Winter Thaw in the Woods – Tom Thomson

I’ve discovered an interesting blog being written by Julian Beecroft, called Coast to Coast with Tom Thomson and the Group of Seven, in which he is travelling across Canada in search of the landscapes which inspired these under-rated artists to make their bold and stunning redefinitions of the Canadian landscape in the 1920s.

Part one – meet Julian Beecroft

Part two – Halifax to Montreal via Charlevoix County

Part three – Southern Ontario – Toronto and Georgian Bay

There will be seven parts in all it seems and I will be watching this journey unfold. In the meantime, should you be near London, I’d recommend checking out the first major exhibition of Group of Seven artists in the UK in many many years at Dulwich Picture Gallery, Painting Canada – Tom Thomson and the Group of Seven.

Small cloud study #1

Small Cloudscape #1

It’s not often I paint anything small enough to scan in on my A4 scanner, but this one is. I think I going to experiment with some glaze work on top of this next week, and if it works well there may be a destiny for a series of these little skyscapes….

This is kind of my tribute to Southern Ontario, but also to The Group of Seven, who were an incredible collective of Canadian artists active in the 1920s and ’30s.
